Back Pain? Visit Orem Chiropractor & Save Money!

As we enter a brave new world of government sponsored health care with politicians and insurers trying to find a way to lower health care expenditures, take a look at what this research says about chiropractors and cost savings.

The Mercer Health and Benefits group did a cost analysis of chiropractic care for low back pain and this is what they found.

When Orem chiropractic care is added to a health benefit plan, the total cost increase of the plan per patient per year increases by only $75.  This is highly cost effective care because it represents a good value in comparison to medical care and to widely accepted cost-effectiveness thresholds.

Low back pain is a common condition and chiropractic care is well established as the treatment of choice for people suffering from low back pain.

When you add chiropractic care to a health insurance plan, the total cost per patient every year only increases by $75.  For neck pain, it actually costs less by $302, incidentally.

Orem chiropractic care is shown to produce better pain and disability outcomes for low back pain, and is shown to be more satisfying to patients when surveyed by satisfaction rates.  This small increase doesn’t even take into account that the researchers didn’t add the costs of pharmaceutical drugs to the health care bill, so their numbers may be conservative.

Chiropractic care is a drug free approach to Orem back pain relief.  Chiropractic care consists mainly of spinal adjustments, but also includes strengthening exercises, massage, stretches, nutritional therapy, oxygen therapy and a variety of joint, muscle and nerve therapies.

Because chiropractic is drug free, there are no side effects either.

When chiropractic was included in health plans, the amount in-patient hospitalizations, imaging studies, hospitalization, surgical procedures were all reduced.  This is significant because these are the very things that drive health care costs up so high.

Here is another, very interesting, fact that researchers discovered.  Paying the chiropractor more didn’t really affect cost savings.  In fact, during the research it was found that paying the chiropractor $40 an office visit produced a $300 annual savings.  Now the cool part (I’ll admit I’m biased) is that when they paid the chiropractor $100 an office visit there was a $294 annual savings.

So, if policy makers want to reduce costs they should be very interested in adding Orem chiropractors to the system and paying them well.

Orem Chiropractor Asks, “How Does Chiropractic Affect Health Care Costs?”

Is chiropractic care worth the cost for treatment?  A couple of years ago, researchers wanted to know the answer to this question, so they created a clinical trial that put chiropractors in the role of primary care physicians.

They looked at the costs and the use of services for three years. The services that they looked at included in-hospital admissions, pharmaceutical costs and outpatient surgeries.

With chiropractors directing care, all of these costs were dramatically reduced.  For three more years, the researchers analyzed the data looking at patient satisfaction.  The patient surveys showed a greater than 90% satisfaction rate.

The complete seven-year study showed the following:
Decreased hospital admissions by 60%
Decreased hospital stays by 59%
Decreased out-patient surgeries by 62%
Decreased pharmaceutical costs by 85%

Another study has looked at not only cost, but tied that in with need for surgery.

Researchers found that patients who received chiropractic had lower total health care costs and were less likely to have surgery than demographically similar patients who did not receive chiropractic, and overall, 89 percent of all patients receiving chiropractic care reported improvement of at least 30 percent within 30 days.

This is significant for those looking for Orem Sciatica Treatment because back surgery fails 74% of the time.  In fact, back surgery fails so often it has a name “failed back surgery syndrome.”  It is described as intractable pain and varying degrees of incapacitation occurring after spine surgery.

So here are the facts:

As your Orem Chiropractor I can help you save you money on health care expenses.  Figures have suggested around $30,000.00 over the course of your lifetime, simply by using chiropractic.

Orem back pain is costly not only in dollars for surgeries but also in quality of life lost.

Not only can I help you save money on dollars spent, but according to the research and my own clinical experience I can help you get the best results with your back pain.  Better results with less cost.

Orem Chiropractor Discusses Religious Activity and Obesity

As your Orem Chiropractor I don’t necessarily deal with obesity directly, I do see and address several of the consequences of it.

With that in mind I thought our religious readers should be familiar with this study.

“Oh Heavily, Father: Churchgoers More Likely to Become Obese”

The results of this study suggest that church goers are “consuming a little bit more than the . . . good word of God.”  Those who attend church frequently in young adulthood are significantly more likely to become obese in middle age.  In fact researchers found that those who with “high frequency” of religious activities were 50% more likely to be obese in middle age.

One of the researchers said, "One possible explanation, though, is that religious gatherings might center on eating traditional, high-calorie comfort food, and this in itself might contribute to the higher incidence and prevalence of obesity."

There might be some actual truth to that.  Having attended religious activities of several faiths, many are associated with food and typically food that is “high-calorie comfort food.”  I haven't seen a church gathering that had baked salmon, spinach salad and filtered water.

In past articles we’ve discussed how many who seek fibromyalgia treatment in Orem or migraine treatment in Orem eat these kinds of foods regularly.

So the take home lesson isn’t to stop your religious activities (many studies suggest that such activities have many beneficial results) but to either avoid the buffet line or convert your congregation to higher nutritional value foods at your gatherings.

Orem Chiropractor Discusses One Reason Back Pain Becomes Chronic

At some point in your life some has probably told you to “have a good attitude.”  Well, researchers at the American Academy of Pain Medicine have just discovered one of the most important reasons why you should have a good attitude about your health.

Are you looking for Orem migraine treatment?  If so please read carefully because there will be important information for you.

Researchers found that thinking of events as a catastrophe or looking at them with fear and being depressed seem to be major predictors of whether acute pain from injury will change into chronic pain.

Studies have shown that having a “catastrophe” attitude about back pain has been found to be SEVEN TIMES more powerful than any other factor in predicting whether pain will become chronic.

Fear also seems to play a role. "Those who had more fear during an acute low back pain episode were much more likely to ultimately over-predict the amount of pain they had, which ultimately led to significant increase in fear-avoidance behaviors, with subsequent worsening of symptoms, increase in duration of pain, and increase in disability," said Sean Mackey, MD, PhD, chief of the pain management division at Stanford University.

Depression and anxiety also had similar effects. 30% to 65% of patients who have chronic pain are also depressed.  Those who are depressed and suffer with anxiety are two to five times more likely to develop chronic pain within eight years.

In a study that appeared in the Annals of Surgery in 2007 researchers found that those with fear of the long term consequences of the operation was associated with more pain, poor recovery and worse quality of life at a six month follow up.

Having these kind of attitudes and beliefs causes a change in a person’s brain and nervous system that inhibits one’s innate ability to end pain.

As your Orem fibromyalgia specialist, I have found that these people not only become more sensitive to pain, but they also develop more persistence of pain.

There appears to be two parts of the brain that contribute.  The first is the lateral orbital frontal cortex.  It’s an area involved with self-evaluation and making decisions on what to do about incoming sensations.  The second area of the brain seems to be the medial prefrontal cortex.  This is an area of the brain that has been found to be dysfunctional in people with post-traumatic stress disorder and generalized anxiety disorder.

The part that is unknown is whether the pain has caused these areas of the brain to malfunction or has the malfunction caused the pain to persist.

As your Orem Chiropractor, I am your Orem back pain specialist.  If you suffer with pain that isn’t going away, consider contacting my office at 801-225-1311.  Learn more at AskDrNed.com

Orem Chiropractor Discusses Fibromyalgia After Car Accident

A new study suggests that an Orem Car Accident raises the risk of developing chronic widespread pain. Researcher did not find this association with other types of physical trauma.

To me this makes perfect sense. I have found that people that suffer with fibromyalgia or Chronic Widespread Pain (CWP) start with some kind of physical or emotional trauma. Very few things are as physically, mentally and emotionally traumatic as a car accident.

Many people with fibromyalgia in Orem report that symptoms began after a car accident. In light of this one of the best things a person can do after being in a car accident is to keep a journal. In this journal report symptoms, effects to lifestyle, etc. By showing health status before your accident and then showing affects after accident, it becomes very difficult for automotive-insurance companies to refuse coverage for post-traumatic fibromyalgia.

The authors of this research are now calling for future research into what makes a car accident different from other types of physical trauma, both physically and in how people react to them.

Do you suffer from fibromyalgia? Did it start after a car accident? What kind of injuries did you suffer in the accident?

As your Orem Chiropractor I specialize in both fibromyalgia and car accident injuries. My Brain Based Chiropractic addresses the cause(s) of these conditions to provide you with lasting relief. In fact I’m proud to say I’ve go an 93% success rate.

Have you been in a car accident? Do you suffer with fibromyalgia or widespread pain? I can help. Call my office 801-225-1311.

Orem Chiropractor - Supplements To Help End Fibromyalgia and Other Chronic Diseases

This article is the final of four articles on how you can decrease pain and inflammation and minimize your risk for chronic disease through your diet.

In this article we’re going to talk about the role supplements should play in this process.

There is a lot of science behind what we’ve previously discussed about diet and inflammation.  The same does not hold true for supplements.  Every year there is a new, magical supplement that will save the world.  In most cases when they work, it is by placebo mechanisms.  We’re going to discuss supplements that have a known anti-inflammatory effect.

Pathology text books now tells us that disease is promoted by a reduction in ATP synthesis, an increase in free-radical generation, and a state of chronic inflammation created by excessive production of pro-inflammatory eicosanoids, cytokines and growth factors.

With this in mind we want to take supplements that counteract these processes.

Magnesium, coenzyme Q10, alpha-lipoic acid, acetyl-L-carnitine, and the nutrients in a multivitamin/mineral are involved in ATP synthesis and the reduction of free radicals. Fish oil, borage oil, and vitamin D supplementation help to reduce the expression of chronic inflammation.

Supplementation with garlic, ginger, turmeric, and boswellia, are also beneficial, as they function as natural anti-inflammatory agents.
Minimally, I would recommend taking at least a multivitamin/mineral, magnesium, and fish oil.

For people on multiple medications and especially for those taking coumadin, it is important to make sure there are no inappropriate interactions. Several texts discuss drug-nutrient interactions; this information is available on a number of Web sites, such as www.medlineplus.com.

Please understand there are no specific conditions that alert us to the need for these supplements. They should be recommended and taken for the purpose of reducing the expression of the chronic inflammatory state. With this in mind, I have seen numerous pro-inflammatory conditions improve, such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, depression, fatigue, psoriasis, eczema, obstructive sleep apnea, radicular pain, and joint & muscle pain.

To read more about the supplements you should be taking and the amounts go here.

Orem Chiropractor Ending Fibromyalgia and Other Chronic Diseases

As your Orem Chiropractor, I have made it my mission to end pain, particularly those with on going back pain, neck pain, dizziness, fibromyalgia, headaches, insomnia, numbness, restless leg syndrome and sciatica.

As I research these and other conditions one thing I’ve discovered is the genetic predisposition that some people have towards these conditions.  Meaning that some people are more likely to develop headaches than others, just because of the way they are wired.

The other thing I’ve learned about genetics is that a lot of our genetics are NOT hard wired.  Meaning just because I have a genetic make up that makes me more likely to have fibromyalgia doesn’t mean I’ll have fibromyalgia.

We’re all predisposed to chronic disease.  The chronic disease that we have a weakness towards is likely to be the cause of our demise, if we pursue it with poor lifestyle choices.

Think of it like this, imagine you’re wearing a wristwatch and a long sleeve shirt and that shirt covers the watch.  Our genes are the watch and it remains covered by our shirt until we lift our sleeve up.  Poor lifestyle choices lift our shirtsleeve up, exposing our genetic weakness, allowing it to go into action.

Through our lifestyle we can either “pursue” or “prevent” the expression of our genetic weakness.

What this means is that you may have a genetic predisposition to heart disease.  Does that mean you’ll have a heart attack?  The great thing is you get to decide by your choices.
Diet and exercise seem to be the most important factors to preventing disease expression.  When we eat an inflammatory diet and live a sedentary lifestyle, we are choosing to activate our personal chronic condition, and over time we will discover what our genetic weakness is when we develop that disease.

What lifestyle choices can help us “prevent” disease expression?  Chiropractic care.  You can read more on that subject here.

That's not the part I want to focus on though.  I want to focus on the things you should be doing on your own to "prevent" disease expression.

Evidence suggests we need to eat more fruit, vegetables, and omega-3 animal products (i.e., eggs, meat, fish, poultry, and wild game). We also can add raw nuts, and if you want a starch, potatoes are the best choice.

Refined sugar, grains, soy, beans, and dairy are not recommended as primary sources of energy, and they are not comparable to fruits, vegetables, and nuts when it comes to nutritional density and phytonutrient content. And we know that lectins and other components of grains and beans make them a pro-inflammatory food.

Diet cannot get any simpler than this.  It's just a matter of whether we are going to do it.

It is important to accept the fact that chronic, subclinical inflammation is the driver of most, if not all, chronic diseases. It is a fact that the same basic inflammatory state underlies heart disease, cancer, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, and most other conditions.

In the next post we'll discuss how using the right dietary supplements can help you to "prevent" chronic disease.

Orem Chiropractor - Nutritional Adjustment to Pain & Inflammation

Many people come to my office - Orem Chiropractor - R. Ned McArthur, D.C., looking for relief from back pain, neck pain, headaches, etc.  I also find that many people take some kind of anti inflammatory, even though they would rather not.

A British study in the journal Pain reviewed 49 randomized, controlled trials with data on gastric or duodenal ulcer, ulcer hemorrhage or perforation, and death attributable to NSAID (aspirin, ibuprofen & acetaminophen) use.

The authors estimated that one in 1,200 patients taking NSAIDs for at least two months died from gastroduodenal complications. They also estimated that 2,000 people in the United Kingdom die each year from gastroduodenal lesions who would not have died if they were not taking NSAIDs.

They note that their results "strongly" suggest that chronic oral NSAIDs pose a high risk of adverse effects and urge that "patients receive minimum effective doses for the minimum possible time."

Always ask your doctor about the potential risks of any medications you may be taking.

Inflammation producing pain is a pretty easy concept for most of us to understand.  But did you know that most chronic health conditions are also related to inflammation? An example of this would be Alzheimer’s disease.

As it turns out, about 4% of elderly people in India end up with Alzheimer’s disease, while almost 16% of America’s elderly do.

A researcher from UCLA, Dr. Frautschy, suggests that the liberal intake of the spice turmeric may be the reason for this significant difference.  Tumeric is both a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent that is capable of inhibiting prostaglandins and other pro inflammatory substances.

Dr Frautschy has also suggested that Ginger may be even more potent than turmeric.  Ginger has also proven to be effective in eliminating prostaglandins, as well as the pain from osteo and rheumatoid arthritis.

Taken properly ginger can be an effective pain & inflammation reducer.  When taken long term it can be a  “nutritional adjustment” to prevent chronic inflammatory conditions like Alzheimer’s disease.

By combining a nutritional approach with my Brain Based Chiropractic methods & procedures I've been a go to Orem fibromyalgia doctor, as well as being a leading Orem back doctor.

Since coming to see Dr McArthur I've become more energetic and pain free.  I"ve begun going to the gym and have lost a little weight.  I've also been motivated to start a healthy diet and do more than sit on the couch.  It's been wonderful.  Jessica M.  Orem, UT

Orem Chiropractor Discusses Foods To Improve Your Love Life

Continuing to take inspiration from Valentines Day I came up with
a list of foods that very well may affect hormone levels, energy, brain chemistry and arousal.  I'll be the first to admit that there is little to no
research backing the claims of these foods, many people have reported the aphrodisiac affects of eating these foods.

1.  Asparagus which is rich in vitamins B6 and B9 (pyridoxine and folate) both of which can boost arousal.  It also high in vitamin E which stimulates sex hormones in both men and women.

2.  Avocados are loaded with vitamin B6, minerals and monounsaturated fats both of which are vital for energy production and libido.  Avocados are also a great source of Omega -3 fats.

3.  Chili Peppers can spice up your love life due to capsaicin which has been shown to promote the release of endorphins in the brain.

4.  Chocolate  and love have long been associated, probably because of tryptophan which is a precursor to the feel good brain chemical serotonin which contributes to arousal.

5.  Licorice is thought to mimic the affects of estrogen and progesterone which are critical to sexual function in women.  It helps women get in the mood and stay that way longer.  It may even reduce the PMS symptoms as well.  For this to be effective though, if can't be any licorice flavored candy, it needs to be real licorice root extract.

6.  Oysters  are high in zinc which helps the body produce testosterone which is important to libido and sexual function in both men and women.

Orem Chiropractor Discusses Nutritional Approach To Inflammation & Pain Relief

Today I’m going to discuss the article “Omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil) as an anti-inflammatory: an alternative to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for discogenic [neck and back] pain.” Surg Neurol. 2006 Apr;65(4):326-31, Maroon JC, Bost, JWSurg Neurol. 2006 Apr;65(4):326-31, Maroon JC, Bost, JW

This research was done at the Uniersity of Pittsburgh Medical Center, in Pittsburgh, PA.

As your Orem Chiropractor I want to make the world a better place and the way that I can do that is by making your life better.

In this article you’ll find some information that will make your life better by reducing back pain, neck pain and headaches without the use of drugs or surgery.

NSAID or Non Sterodial Anti Inflammatory Drugs are a commonly used drug for neck pain & back pain. In most cases people are able to use these medications without incident. Unfortuantley, for some complications like gastric ulcers, bleeding, myocardial infarction, and even death occurs.

The authors report that “An alternative treatment with fewer side effects that also reduces the inflammatory response and thereby reduces pain is believed to be omega-3 EFAs found in fish oil.”

The researchers took 250 people who had been seen by a neurosurgeon and were found to have nonsurgical neck or back pain. These people were then asked to take 1200 mg per day of omega-3 EFAs (eicosapentaenoic acid and decosahexaenoic acid) found in fish oil supplements.

After 75 days on the fish oil 78% were taking 1200mg and 22% had increased their fish oil to 2400mg.

Now, here’s the cool stuff. 59% stopped taking their prescription NSAID’s for pain. 60% stated that their overall pain was improved and that their joint pain had improved. Eighty percent stated they were satisfied with their improvement, and 88% stated they would continue to take the fish oil.

There were no significant side effects reported.

To conclude researchers stated that “Our results mirror other controlled studies that compared ibuprofen and omega-3 EFAs demonstrating equivalent effect in reducing arthritic pain. omega-3 EFA fish oil supplements appear to be a safer alternative to NSAIDs for treatment of nonsurgical neck or back pain in this selective group.”

Orem Chiropractor Treats Car Accident Injuries

If you or somebody you know has been in an auto accident I have some important information for you.

First watch this video to get an insiders perspective on the practices of insurance companies in regards to those who have been in an accident.

Auto injuries can create chronic, disabling problems which can affect your work, your hobbies, and even your relationships.

Even injuries that seem minor can lead to suffering and an increased risk of re-injury.

Here’s what they do.  Insurance company giants use a highly sophisticated computer program that considers several factors from your accident to determine what your claim is worth. Sounds fair right?  These problem is, these programs serve one purpose:  save auto insurance companies big dollars.

If you’ve been in an accident choosing the right doctor is critical.

Of course, doctors are here to help you, but going to the wrong doctor can mess up your chances of a fair settlement. Why? Because doctors have learned how to help people, but many are not trained in the rules & requirements of insurance software guidelines.

These guidelines are a set of very specific questions, medical report formatting procedures, and even seemingly minor forms, that influences your claim.

As your Orem Chiropractor that treats car accident injuries.  If you’ve been in an accident you have to play by their rules.  I’m here to objectively, and correctly document your injuries so you can make a fair claim and receive a fair settlement.

There are plenty of Orem Chiropractors that can help you, but you need an Orem car accident chiropractor that knows how to get you better quick and knows how to play by the insurance company rules.  Don’t be a victim twice.  Call for a consultation, we can help you. 801-225-1311

Orem Chiropractor Adds Years To Your Life By Subtracting Your Sitting Time

As your Orem Chiropractor I want to give health information you may not get any where else.

Before you read this article you may want to sit down for a minute - but quite frankly that's the opposite of what you should do!

A study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology suggests that people who sit for more than six hours a day have an increased risk of early death.

Now maybe your thinking this applies to only the couch potato who watches TV all the time and never exercises.  If you are, then I've got bad news.  Researchers found that even if you exercise for three hours a day and sit for nine hours a day, you're more likely to die than someone who doesn't exercise at all but spends only a few hours a day sitting.
I'm not trying to discount all the benefits of exercise and an active life, but simply to point out that there are very real risks associated with prolonged sitting.  Not to mention the headaches and back pain that can result from sitting too long.
When you sit for prolonged periods of time circulation, metabolism, resting blood pressure and cholesterol can all be affected.

Another thing, when you spend more time sitting, especially in front of the TV or computer leads to excessive snacking, which can lead to many other problems.

To combat this phenomenon a treadmill desk has been invented.  Check this out.

This isn't the answer for everybody.  Being on your feet excessively puts extra stress on your joints and muscles, especially of the hip.

Just remember to Sit Less & Move More - you just may add a few years to your life.

Orem Chiropractor Discusses Top 10 Foods For Good Health

Do you have neck pain, back pain, or headaches ?  Are you looking for an Orem Chiropractor?
Do you want to live a more healthy lifestyle?  If so I've got the article for you:

Top 10 Whole Foods For Health

Nutritionally, there is no perfect food, although a few come pretty close. And even if there were, who’d
want to eat the same thing every meal, every day? Fortunately, variety and healthy eating can go hand in
hand, particularly if you know where to look. Here’s a Top 10 list of foods that pack a nutritional punch and
can be incorporated into a wide variety of meal plans.

1. Anything Fresh
With the fast pace of life today, it’s hard to make time for fresh food. Why should
you? Because food that’s fresh, especially if it’s locally grown, is often the healthiest diet choice out there.
Fresh food contains a complete array of nutrients, which is just not available in many processed foods. Even
in winter we can find root vegetables, apples and pumpkins.

2. Beets
Here’s an interesting fact: Beets were one of the most successful crops in the
Biosphere project. Don’t remember the Biosphere project? Basically, it simulated living on the moon. And
if you had to pick one vegetable to take with you to the moon, you’d do well to pick beets. The roots and
leaves are packed with antioxidant phytochemicals, provide much-needed minerals and vitamins, and are a
good source of fiber.

3. Rye
Obesity statistics suggest a good portion of us could use some help battling the scale, and rye is on your
side. Rye has an excellent reputation for helping us feel full, produces a low insulin response, and is
typically a good source of fiber. It is a rich source of minerals, too. But watch out! "Rye" breads can be a
mix of different flour sources, so make sure whatever brand you get consists of whole grains in general, and
rye in particular. And don’t forget - there are other ways to enjoy rye, like as a hot cereal (or porridge). One
small study found that people who ate rye porridge for breakfast ate 16 percent less at lunch than those who
ate white bread toast.

4. Organic Berries
This isn’t a hard sell, right? Juicy, bright, and tasty, berries add fiber,
vitamins and antioxidants to your diet. These little gems appear to support healthy arteries, cognition,
inflammation and eyesight. Many studies have found a benefit in drinking cranberry or blueberry juice for
prevention of urinary tract infections. But watch out for juice - sugary drinks aren’t on anyone’s top 10 lists!
Eat the berries alone, in your cereal, or in a smoothie for the most benefit. And get organic berries when you
can; when you can’t, rinse your berries well. Even frozen, they can retain pesticide residue, and that’s not
good for anyone.

5. Fermented foods
Face it Mr. Clean, the human body needs bacteria, and fermented foods provide
"good" bacteria (probiotics) to give our native colonies a helping hand. Fermentation means that probiotics
(like Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium) are added to foods (including miso, yogurt and sauerkraut), and the
food is changed as the bacteria process it. Clinical trials continue to examine the benefits of probiotics on
gastrointestinal complaints like diarrhea and irritable bowel syndrome, as well as for conditions such as
colic and eczema in infants.

6. Legumes
Don’t fear the beans! Yes, some legumes have "explosive" potential, but adding beans, lentils, or peas to our
diet may be one way to keep us merrily dancing along. This low-fat, no-cholesterol source of protein, fiber,
vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals is among the best foods we can eat. As a substitute for meat-based
protein, beans can help support our drive for heart health. And the fiber and protein in legumes are excellent
tools in our weight-management toolbox.

7. Cruciferous vegetables
Broccoli, radishes, the dreaded Brussels sprouts and cabbage are all members of
this illustrious family of veggies. Associations between low incidence of some cancers and high intake of
cruciferous veggies have led to more in-depth research on how these unassuming vegetables contribute to a
healthy diet. Crucifers are especially rich in phytochemicals (including isothiocyanates such as
sulforaphane), both of which are responsible for these vegetables’ pungent or spicy flavor and appear to help
the body’s detoxification processes. The phytonutrients in these vegetables also seem to affect the body’s
ability to respond to free radicals. Steamed or raw, they retain the majority of their nutrients.

8. Organic Figs
Fresh or dried, these teardrops of deliciousness are a wonderful addition to any
diet. High in fiber, potassium and manganese, figs can support heart health and weight management as part
of a healthy diet and exercise program. They’re great on their own as dessert or a snack, and they make a
wonderful addition to salad, too. Choose the organic ones, though, especially if you are sensitive to sulfites.

9. Fatty Fish
In this case, fat is good. Cold-water fish (like salmon and sardines) contain a high
concentration of omega-3 fatty acids (specifically EPA and DHA) that appear to have a host of health
benefits. Large, rigorous trials from around the globe have found evidence that diets with the highest levels
of omega-3 fatty acids are also the most heart healthy. The American Heart Association recommends that
healthy adults should eat two, 3-ounce servings a week, which is in line with the American Diabetes
Association and the World Health Organization.

10. Whatever You Don’t Eat Now
Variety is important. It’s so easy to get stuck in a food rut, especially if you’re
counting calories. So instead of eating yogurt and cherries as a snack every day, why not try oatmeal and
blueberries? Or string cheese and an apple? Buying a farm share or visiting a farmer’s market can be a good
way to try new vegetables. And if something looks unusual - pick it up! You can put the power of the

THANK YOU VERY MUCH for taking my headaches away.  I honestly don’t know what I would do without you.  I never expected to have such a huge change in posture & energy.  It’s a dream come true!  I can spend more quality time with my 2-year-old son.  Life is short, I feel very lucky to get a second chance.

Orem Chiropractor - Forward Head Posture = Headaches, Neck & Back Pain

As your Orem Chiropractor, here’s a fun little experiment to try.  Get something that weighs about 10 pounds and you can easily hold in your hand – like a 10-pound weight.

We’re using a 10-pound weight because that’s the average weight of the adult head.  Now hold that weight with your fist towards the ceiling.  Now bend your wrist backwards.  (Don’t do this experiment if you have hand or wrist problems)  With your wrist bent back you are mimicking the natural curve of your neck.  Get a sense for what the feels like.

Now take the curve away by holding your arm and wrist perfectly vertical.  Get a sense of how that feels.  Now slowly move your hand forward and elbow backwards.  How does that feel compared to when you were holding the weight with your wrist bent backwards?  Not very good, I’m sure.

According to Dr. Kapandji in his book Physiology of the Joint, Volume III, for every inch your head moves forwards, it add 10 pounds of stress and tension to the muscle of your neck and upper back.

Now back to our experiment.  The weight represents your head and your forearm represents your spine.  After doing our little experiment with the weight I’m sure you can understand how much harder the muscles in your neck and upper back have to work when your head is in this abnormal posture.

This condition is called “Forward Head Posture.”  People with this condition lose the normal curve of their neck and the head moves out in front of the neck and shoulders.

Another consequence is the suboccipital muscles (muscles just below your skull in the back of your head) become extremely tight, which puts pressure on the three suboccipital nerves.  This can result in headaches felt in the base of the skull and in the sinus area in the front of your head.

Rene Cailliet M.D., famous medical author and former director of the department of physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Southern California states:

Head in forward posture can add up to thirty pounds of abnormal leverage on the cervical spine. This can pull the entire spine out of alignment. Forward head posture (FHP) may result in the loss of 30% of vital lung capacity. These breath-related effects are primarily due to the loss of the cervical lordosis, which blocks the action of the hyoid muscles, especially the inferior hyoid responsible for helping lift the first rib during inhalation.”

As an Orem Chiropractor, it's not uncommon to observe 2" of anterior head placement.  Would you be surprised that your neck and shoulders hurt if you had a 20-pound watermelon hanging around your neck?

Forward head posture is also known as hyperkyphotic posture and can also lead to an upper thoracic hump.  Those with forward head posture (FHP) have also been shown to have a 1.44 greater rate of mortality.

After visiting with Dr McArthur I soon discovered that these headaches I was having, from the time I woke up to the time I went to bed, could be solved with chiropractic care.  I really enjoyed how the doctor sat and listened to me and really wanted to help me. He told the truth.  I had been having these headaches for months and was always taking pills.  Since beginning my care I am so much more alert, I have more energy, I’m not taking a lot of pills and I don’t snap at anyone anymore either because I am not in the constant pain that I use to be in.  I would recommend Dr McArthur to others because he has helped me so much and I really feel better.  Others deserve that.  I also enjoy all of the energy that Dr McArthur and the office staff has.  They are always happy and eager to help you, definitely great customer service.  Karyn H., Orem

Orem Chiropractor R. Ned McArthur, D.C. Enhances Your Brain

This history of chiropractic is based on the fact that by using the joints and muscles of the body we can positively influence nerves throughout the body.

In the last decade we’ve learned more about the brain than we knew about it in the previous 150 years.  Some of the most exciting research in all of health & medical research is being done on the brain.

In the February 2007 issue of Clinical Neurophysiology there appears an article titled, “Cervical Spine Manipulation alters sensorimotor integration: A somatosensory evoked potential study.”

In this study, researchers hooked up electrodes to volunteers. They were plugged in to the brain’s cortex, the brainstem, and the spinal cord. These hookups were measured using somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP). The people being studied had a history of neck stiffness, but not neck pain during the time of the study.

While plugged in to the machine, the patients being studied had their brain activity measured before a chiropractic adjustment to get a baseline measurement.  Then they received a chiropractic adjustment.  After having their neck adjusted the frequency of firing of their brain was measured.  In simpler terms frequency of firing is the level of brain activity.  They found that after people had their neck adjusted, there is an improvement of brain activity for a full twenty minutes afterward.

Nerve sensors monitor all of the joints and muscles in our body.   These sensors feed information to the brain, brainstem, and the cerebellum. Whenever there is a loss of movement in any joint, there is a marked loss of information going into the brain.  This information is like water in your sprinkler system.  Water can still go through your pipes and sprinkler heads to water your lawn, but if there is a problem an area of your lawn will get less water and it might take some time before you actually see the results in your lawn.

The same thing happens with this nerve stimulation to the brain.  It’s still going to the brain, but it less than it should be.  The brain requires this information to take care of many different basic functions.  Without it the brain’s ability block pain is greatly reduced.  Other consequences of this decrease in brain stimulation can be stiffness and numbness as well as posture, balance, digestion and sleep problems.

Through chiropractic adjustments and other therapies, Orem Chiropractor – R. Ned McArthur, D.C. will correct and enhance your brain function to end your pain and health problems.

Diet & Pain

The foods we eat are nothing more than fuel for our body. With that in mind, if you put bad fuel into your car how does it work? Not so well. If you put bad fuel into your body how does your body work? You get the idea.

There are more ideas on what constitues a healthy diet than I care to even think about. Because of that fact many people ask "what should I eat? What should I NOT eat? What supplements should I take?

What should you eat?
All fruits, vegetables, fish, poultry, meats (grass fed beef is best), eggs, organic dairy products, nuts (almonds are best), seeds, olive and coconut oils.

What Should you NOT Eat?
Sugar, flour, white rice, baked goods, pasta, caffeine, processed and/or packaged foods, artificial colors, artificial sweeteners, preservatives, alcohol, hydrogenated oils, and fast foods.

These foods must be avoided because they are either toxic (artificial sweeteners) or they produce inflammation. These foods are high in omega-6 fatty acids with little to no omega-3 fatty acids. An imbalance of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids produces inflammation. The ideal ratio omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids is a 1:1 ratio. (The average American has a 30:1 ratio). Therefore, eating these foods produces inflammation and perpetuates pain.

What Supplements Should you Take?

Essential Supplements Dosage
1. Multivitamin/Mineral Follow directions on bottle
2. Magnesium 6 mg per 2.2 lbs. of body weight
3. Fish Oil 1.5 grams of Omega-3 fats daily
4. Co Enzyme Q10 100 mg daily
5. Ginger  2 gram daily

Recommended Supplements
1. Vitamin D3 2000 IU daily or 30 minutes of sun exposure
2. Acetyl – L – Carnitine 1000 mg daily, in divided doses
3. Lipoic Acid 400 mg daily, in divided doses

A multivitamin provides the antioxidants and nutrients our bodies must have.
Magnesium is an essential mineral that plays a role in thousands of bodily functions. Fish Oil and ginger are anti-inflammatory. Co Enzyme Q10 is involved in how we produce energy. Vitamin D stimulates the immune system. Acetyl L Carnitine and Lipoic Acid slow, or even reverse the aging process in our cells.

Smoking
Smoking decreases your oxygen intake. Adequate oxygen is essential to healing. Without it your body cannot heal completely and your brain and nervous system can not function properly. If you suffer from chronic pain and you smoke, you NEED to quit.

How Will I Feel?
If you have had a poor diet up to this point, the first 3-7 days may be rough. Most toxins are fat-soluble. That means they get stored in our fat tissue. As you give your body the proper nutrients you will start eliminating excess fat. When you eliminate fat the stored toxins are released which may lead to fatigue, headaches, mood swings, nausea, and flu like symptoms. Give your body about a week and you will begin to have more energy, your memory will improve, thinking will be clearer and your overall outlook will brighten.

Back Pain

About 85 percent of the American population will experience disabling, low back pain at least once during their life. The problem is so bad that, at any one time, 6.8 percent of the U.S. adult population is suffering from an episode of back pain that has been going on for more than two weeks. That’s a lot of bad backs.

The estimated cost of this problem in the U.S. is over $50 billion a year.
Even uncomplicated cases of back pain can cost upwards of $8000. Care for these cases can include muscle relaxers, painkillers, rest, physical therapy & minor surgery. Costs for more complicated cases that includes fusion surgery can balloon up to $17,000. However, these approaches have not been found very helpful. Some studies suggest spinal surgeries should be performed only rarely. Many people who have had back surgery report a recurrence of their symptoms within a year or two of the operation and may return to the operating table. In some cases, the surgery makes no difference whatsoever.

The reason many surgeries don’t bring lasting results is because they don't address what back problems do to the brain.
http://www.northwestern.edu/newscenter/stories/2004/11/chronic.html

The cerebellum is a part of the brain that controls all of your postural muscles around the spine. When it functions correctly it keeps our posture upright and our back muscles toned and flexible.

So here’s what happens . . . a person experiences one or more types of stress.
Remember, stress can be physical (injury, accident, bending/twisting) chemical (junk food, cigarette smoke, toxins) or mental (job, relationships, finances).

Stress, no matter what kind of stress, causes the release of stress hormones. If the stress is a big enough stress or goes on long enough stress hormones will reach a level where they become toxic to the cerebellum, causing it to malfunction.
When the cerebellum malfunctions you'll notice muscle tightness around the spine and your posture will be less upright (slouching).
When these muscles are in a constant state of tension joint movement is decreased. Reduced joint movement leads to decay and degeneration of the bones and discs of the spine. This is when discs bulge or herniate.
So maybe you're thinking "well, all I have to do is eliminate my stress and my pain will go away." For you that might work. For the rest of us though it's about changing how our brain and body respond to the stress.

You can keep taking your ibuprofen or other medications for back pain . . . you can keep doing your back exercises . . . you can keep getting a massage . . . you can keep doing all sorts of other things for your back pain (these are all good things and I have recommend them before), but your back pain will continue to rear it’s ugly head until the underlying problem in the cerebellum is resolved.

So the secret to eliminating chronic back pain is to correct dysfunction in the cerebellum.
